where hope lives...

History of St. Clare's

Our Program

St. Clare's home has been providing love, shelter and care for homeless and battered women and children since 1983. It was the first of it's kind in San Diego's North county. The non-denominational, non-profit organization was founded by Sister Claire Frawley while she was teaching a youth ministry at a local church.

In 1980, a pregnant teen aged girl with a small child sought her help because the girl was living out of her car, had not eaten for two days and had no resources and nowhere to go. Sister Claire took her home for the weekend, and later rented a house for her and another young mother in need.

Since that time, St. Clare's Home has helped over 5,000 young mothers and their children escape domestic violence and end the cycle of homelessness, abuse and addiction. It is the largest provider of long-term transitional housing for homeless and abused women and children in North County.
